Partnering With Families Every Step of the Way

We believe that families are essential partners in your child’s learning journey. That’s why we invite you to be actively involved—through special events, meaningful volunteer opportunities, and everyday connections. You’ll stay closely connected to your child’s world with regular updates, photos, videos, and messages, so you can celebrate their discoveries, milestones, and daily moments of joy right alongside them.

Communication

At Jan’s Place, we make it easy for families to stay informed and involved in their child’s day. We believe that strong family connections help children thrive.

  • Personal check-ins: Chat with us at drop-off or pick-up whenever it’s convenient for you.
  • Handwritten daily reports: Each child receives a thoughtful, handwritten report detailing their activities, learning, and milestones from the day.
  • Regular communication through Brightwheel: Our secure, password-protected Parent Portal keeps you connected with messages, notifications, and updates, and allows you to update account information, make payments, print statements, and review activity timelines.
  • Additional updates: We also share monthly newsletters, handouts, emails, and phone calls to keep you fully informed.

This combination of personal attention and modern tools ensures you stay connected and able to celebrate your child’s everyday discoveries and growth.

Highest Standards

At Jan’s Place, the health and safety of every child and staff member is our top priority. From the quality of materials in our classrooms to the cleanliness and maintenance of our center, we take every step to create a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment.

All of our staff are certified in CPR, First Aid, and emergency response, ensuring that your child is in capable and prepared hands at all times. Our center is maintained to the highest standards of hygiene and safety, and we are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and carry private insurance to further protect our students and staff.

We also prioritize professional development for our educators. Each summer, our team participates in intensive training to stay current on early childhood best practices, health and safety protocols, and new learning strategies to support your child’s growth.

By combining rigorous safety measures, licensing and insurance compliance, and ongoing staff training, we provide families with the peace of mind that your child is cared for in the safest, most supportive, and professionally maintained environment possible.

Family Involvement

Your involvement is vital to our center. When families participate, it sends a powerful message to your child that you support and value their learning. You are an integral part of their growth and success.

At Jan’s Place, we have an open-door policy, welcoming families to visit our center anytime. We provide many meaningful ways to get involved, from volunteering in the classroom to attending special events and joining family conferences.

Here are just a few opportunities to participate in our Preschool Program throughout the year:

  • Mystery Readers
  • Pumpkin Picking
  • Thanksgiving Pageant
  • Christmas Concert
  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Muffins in the Morning (Mother’s Day)
  • Donuts with Grownups (Father’s Day)
  • End-of-Year Celebration

By joining us in these experiences, you help create a strong sense of community and show your child that learning is celebrated and shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know choosing the right preschool comes with many questions. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common ones.

If you’d like to talk with us directly, please call 978-663-3131.

  • What ages do you serve?

Jan’s Place serves children ages three through five years old.

  • Does my child need to be fully potty trained?

Children enrolled in Jan's Place Preschool must be potty trained* by the first day of school.

We understand that accidents may still happen. These accidents are unusual incidents that occur infrequently. We have a three accident policy in place. If a child has three or more accidents in a month’s time we will reevaluate his or her placement in preschool.

    Potty Trained children can:

Communicate to teachers that they need to use the restroom.

Independently use the bathroom facility without assistance.

Wear cloth underwear. No Pull-ups or diapers are allowed.

*If your child has a medical condition or a special need we are happy to work with you regarding this policy.

We understand that accidents may still happen. If a child has three or more accidents in a month, we will reevaluate their placement to ensure success in the program.

  • When can I enroll my child?

Jan’s Place serves children ages three through five years old in our preschool program.

Our Extended Day and Summer Programs serves children ages three to eight years old.

  • What is the class size?

Our teacher-to-student ratio is 1:5, and each preschool program has a maximum capacity of 10 students. We cannot exceed this limit, in compliance with Massachusetts EEC rules and regulations, which ensures the safety and quality of care for every child.

  • How much time do children spend outdoors?

Outdoor play is an important part of our daily routine. We strive to go outside twice each day—morning and afternoon—weather and temperature permitting. When conditions are favorable, we take full advantage of our outdoor space and spend as much of the day outside as possible, with the exception of rest time and bathroom breaks.

  • Do you offer transportation?

Unfortunately, Jan’s Place does not provide transportation to or from our center at this time.

  • Do you offer financial aid?

At this time, Jan’s Place does not offer financial assistance and does not accept vouchers.

  • What are your hours of operation?

Our preschool day runs from 8am to 2pm, with optional extended day from 2pm to 4pm.

  • Do you follow the public school calendar?

Yes. We generally follow the Billerica Public Schools calendar for holidays and vacations. Families are given advance notice of any variations.

We also follow Billerica Public Schools for weather-related delays and closings to ensure consistency and safety for our families.

  • Can I sit in with my child in class?

Yes! We have an open-door policy, and families are always welcome to visit or observe the class. To minimize disruption, we ask that visits be limited to 15–20 minutes. It’s often helpful to let the teachers know in advance who will be visiting (siblings, grandparents, etc.).

We also offer many monthly opportunities for families to be involved in their child’s learning.

  • How do you help with separation anxiety?

We understand that separation anxiety is a normal and important part of early childhood development. Our teachers support all children—especially those experiencing separation anxiety—by using positive, safe, and caring affirmations that help build trust, comfort, and emotional security.

We also use gentle distraction and redirection, guiding children toward engaging activities or offering a calm, cozy space—such as our library area—for cuddles, books, and comfort items like stuffies. Children may also be invited to help with an “important job,” which helps build confidence and provides a sense of purpose during transitions.

Throughout this process, we maintain open communication with families and provide updates and reassurance so you know how your child is adjusting. With consistency, patience, and a nurturing approach, most children quickly develop confidence and comfort in their school routine.

  • Why do you offer rest time for full day preschool?

In Accordance with Massachusetts EEC Regulations; “Programs where children attend for more than four hours provide a time period for rest, quiet activity, or sleep of not less than forty-five minutes”.

Rest provides students with the chance to physically and emotionally unwind. In addition, studies show that classroom naps can enhance memory and support learning in preschool children. A lot is happening in the brain of a slumbering preschooler, including processing and storing memories that are the foundation for learning.

Children who no longer take naps will be provided with quiet activites such as reading picture books, listening to classical music, or coloring.

  • Allergy Aware

Food allergies can be severe and potentially life-threatening. For the safety of all students, Jan’s Place does not provide morning or afternoon snacks. Families are responsible for packing nut-free snacks and lunches (no peanuts, tree nuts, peanut butter, or Nutella).

We ask families to be conscientious in selecting foods to minimize exposure risks. As someone with food allergies myself, I deeply appreciate and understand the care families take to keep children safe.

  • What makes Jan’s Place different from other preschools?

Jan’s Place offers a warm, home-based learning environment where every child is truly known. With small class sizes, low teacher-to-student ratios, and a play-based, Reggio-inspired approach, we are able to focus on the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. Our strong family partnerships, personalized care, and thoughtfully designed spaces allow children to feel safe, confident, and excited to learn each day.
